In November 2022, Timikja Smith filed a complaint in Illinois pursuing claims against hair relaxer producers alleging that these companies failed to warn women about the toxic chemicals in their home perm products. 1

A growing number of cases against hair relaxer companies are being filed following several studies highlighting the health risks associated with the phthalates and skin-disrupting chemicals found in these mostly black women-marketed products. 1

There are currently several lawsuits being filed but no cases have gone to trial as of December 2022.4
